Dulwich Outdoor Gallery in London. Meeting of Old Masters and Street Artists.

Dulwich London STIK

Have you visited London more than once and want to discover something new? Well, you are in a good place. Let me tell you about Dulwich – a charming village hidden in London.

I learned about Dulwich Outdoor Gallery during a classic research before the trip. I came across a mention of this place on the Dutch Girl In London blog. The concept of this place is simple but interesting. A local gallery came up with the idea to promote the 17th and 18th century artworks from the permanent collection at Dulwich Picture Gallery and asked for help… street artists. They were asked to interpret works of Old Masters in their unique style.

Eliza and Mary Davidson Tilly Kettle interpreted by STIK (2012)

The Boys Murillo interpreted by Michael Beerens (2014)

You will find paintings made by great world-famous artists such as Stick, ROA, Conor Harrington, Phlegm and many more here! I had a lot of fun when I was looking for each artwork, and discovering unexpected interpretations. It was the first time when the classical art gave me so much joy. And I am the type of person who likes exploring museums.

Massacre of the Innocents Le Brun interpreted by Conor Harrington (2013)

Before we get to the art, look around where we are. You’ll get to Dulwich quietly by train, but after that, you’ll get around by bus (yes, the double-decker one). You can feel the history in this area, especially in the architecture. It all looks insane. And all of this within the borders of London!

Street Art Dulwich: the best of

The worst thing about city breaks is that they only last for a weekend. Because of this, I didn’t manage to check out all the works created at the Dulwich Outdoor Gallery. The project is not a new one, so some of the works I was looking for have already disappeared. Below, I show you what I found. However, please don’t take this as a guide. It is more like a photo memory. 😉

But no worries. If you want to visit the place, just visit Giulia’s blog, where you’ll find an up-to-date map and much more information.

Is there more to see than the interpretations in Dulwich?

Of course! Besides the type of art I talked earlier, you can find here “normal” street art. I didn’t have much time but even I found some stencils, murals and small form of art. I put some of examples below.

So, that’s all for me. If you are interested of location of particular artworks, let me know in comment or talk to me on my Instagram. 🙂

Meanwhile I am have to prepare myself for the next trip!

bye, bye!
